About KUMS


Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences was first established as the nursing high school in 1968 and it was then changed into a medical college in 1975. After the Islamic Revolution, it was further developed into a medical university in 1985.

The University has 391 academic members and 4657 students studying for their A.S , B.S , M.S , D.D.S, Pharm.D , MD, specialty and subspecialties degrees, in the 6 faculties , passing their practical courses in Teaching Hospitals.

The university regulates and coordinates the activities of medical education, training & research in healthcare throughout the province of Kermanshah. Among the countless research activities, The University is mainly focusing on higher research degree programmes in basic medical sciences, allied health sciences and nursing.

In addition to teaching and treatment affairs, it has also been dealing with such areas as research, innovations, and an attempt to help develop medical and paramedical sciences. The university is consisted of 8 vice-chancellors, 6 faculties, 7 hospitals in Kermanshah, and 17 hospitals in Kermanshah, Islam Abad, Paveh, Salas Babajani, Javanroud, Dalahoo, Ravansar, Sarpole' Zohab, Sonqor, Sahneh, Qasre-Shirin, Kangavar, Gilan Gharb, and Harsin.

KUMS also has 9814 employees and 236 faculty members, and based on well-defined duties and in order to serve the recent scientific and technological leap in the country it has designed scientific strategies and performed effective measures to create a healthy society in an atmosphere full of health.

Based on the vote of 222nd meeting of the Development Council of Universities of Medical Sciences on March 18, 2013, Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences was promoted to type I university. It was recognized as the national pole of community-oriented medicine the same year. Moreover, the educational management of KUMS ranked first in the latest educational ranking of universities (RAD plan). Furthermore, in the overall educational ranking of universities in 2011, KUMS ranked the first among the universities in the west of Iran. Accordingly, it ranked the sixth in the domain of qualitative development of education in universities in Iran. 

Aims:

  • Encouragement of research and the advancement of individual scholars, who by their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue and the society where they dwell.
  • Providing transformational experiences for students and faculties in an inclusive and collaborative environment where creative scholars generate bold ideas, innovate in the face of complex challenges, and distinguish themselves as active citizens of the world.
  • Establishing research facilities in order to recognize unknown potential factors and in order to increase scientific strength related to health problems.
  • Developing health facilities in the society through treatment centers and organizations and their related health centers.

Main Duties:

  • Teaching students in different areas of medical and paramedical sciences and developing community-based medical education.
  • Performing scientific and clinical research in different areas of medical and paramedical sciences according to social and medical needs of the community and the country.
  • Establishing relationships with other universities and exchanging teachers and students with universities inside the country or overseas through academic and cultural contracts.
  • Performing scientific and educational seminars and conferences.
  • Writing and translating books and publishing journals in different areas of medical sciences.
  • Making attempts to perform general policies of the Health Ministry and supervising those attempts in order to provide public health and improving it through application of health programs, especially in the following domains:
    • Supervising optimal performance of health, official programs, and evaluating performed and under-performance programs and activities in the province.
    • Guiding and briefing authorities involved in planning when preparing plans and programs for the subunits, and integrating and coordinating programs with regard to priorities.
    • Supervising demographical studies and analyzing the resulting statistics related to health programs in order to be aware of the quality and quantity of the health activities.
    • Providing necessary facilities for the residents of the area to use the available services through developing public health centers and improving the existing standards.
    • Supervising the exact performance of rules related to storage, use annihilation of biological, narcotic, ingestional, health and beauty, laboratory and medical product, as well as medical and rehabilitation equipments and necessities.
    • Representing the university legally in any claims and attending courts while having attorneys.

  • The presence of 24 subspecialists in different branches, and the activity of some unique subspecialties such as cardiovascular surgery, thoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, uropediatric surgery, etc. in Kermanshah.
