Clinical Observership Program

Introduction:

The Medical Elective Program is a non-degree program organized by the Global Strategies and International Affairs (GSIA) at KUMS and placements are available in our teaching Hospitals such as Imam Reza (AS), Imam Ali (As), Farabi, Imam Khomeni, Motazedi, and Taleghani.

KUMS offers:

A  wide range of acute clinical services including an accident and emergency service, general medicine and surgery, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology. It also provides a number of specialty services including cardiology, cardiac surgery, a special care nursery, a regional transplant unit, dermatology, oncology, clinical genetics, urology and infectious diseases, orthopedics and trauma. 

  • Students will begin by taking part in a short series of tutorials and workshops hosted by experienced members of University Faculty, as well as an opportunity to take part in a simulation session.  
  • Clinical experience will be gained in theatres across all University Hospitals, with exposure to a wide variety of sub-speciality areas. Opportunities also exist to present interesting cases or data to colleagues.   
  • Students need to have covered at least two years of clinical training,



Criteria:


In order to be eligible to apply for KUMS Medical Elective Programs, the applicant must satisfy the conditions below:

  • The candidate must be a medical student. Students of majors other than medicine are excluded.
  • The candidate should not be a graduate.
  • The candidate must be in their final or penultimate year of study of their medical degree, as students are expected to have done some clinical training before they can undertake an elective at KUMS.
  • The candidate must be enrolled at a non-Iranian University, be an international student studying in an Iranian university, or be an Iranian student studying abroad.




By the end of your Elective, you should have had the opportunity:

  • To develop your own knowledge and skills in clinical medicine, and contribute to others' development, through active participation in tutorials and bedside teaching
  • To gain an understanding of disease processes in the area of your Elective subject, and how these may present
  • To appreciate the influence of social and cultural factors in health and illness
  • To meet and socialize with other medical students from KUMS, elsewhere in the KUMS and overseas
  • To use time and resources effectively
  • To understand the organization of health care provision in Iran
  • To compare the system at KUMS and other systems you have experienced
